Diners overwhelmingly call out the signature dish as the must-order. The vibe reads as vegan restaurant — service is consistently described as warm and unhurried. Common gotcha: queues form at peak times — go early or late.

Excerpts

Our first time coming here and we will definitely be back. From entering and being greeted with “Happy Anniversary” to the excellent service from everyone. My wife had the beef tips and scallops and those were phenomenal. I had a New York strip with the mashed potatoes and spinach and let me tell you, it was on point! Compliments to the chef and his team! Let me get to our server, Sara S. From the start she and the service team ensured our drinks were always full and gave us some great recommendations. Her attentiveness was some of the best I’ve had. Keep up the great work! We need more servers like Sara S.!

Montarra is about as fine as dining gets in the Algonquin area. You're asked, "Are you celebrating anything special?" upon approaching the host's stand. "Our babysitter not cancelling," was my reply. Montarra is modern and tastefully minimalistic, without as much atmospheric character as Port Edwards or distinctive cultural identity as Cucina Bella. Still, this is a high-end choice for upscale, elegant dining with gourmet quality dishes. The server staff shines through in teamwork to keep your glass full and your table clear. Our server, Kasey, typified human attentiveness with emotional presence, not a vacuous corporate drone punching a clock like so many of the chains on Randall. Impeccable food and presentation. My dining companion and I split a deliciously fresh beet salad no problem. Then came fresh-baked sweet dinner rolls with savory butter on the house. My companion enjoyed a duet of beef tenderloin and bacon wrapped jumbo scallops. Crispy bacon and smooth scallops, Montarra shines with surf n' turf pairings. My beef stroganoff, with the complex richness of melted gruyére cheese, was spot on. Our server called the beef stroganoff underrated, I agree. Outstanding service without distracting, flashy screens and annoying promotional offers typical of large corporate chains which can be harder to find west of the river. Four star atmosphere for sparking clean restrooms, elegant decor, but I'll hold a star back because, while posh, it's so modern it's indistinct, yet definitely American. One third of the floor area is bar, the middle is some kind of inner sanctum with an alluring water feature (not sure how to get in there), and we were seated in the formal dining room. The tables in the formal dining room are packed in pretty tight so it can be hard to walk around while respecting other's personal space. Last, I wish I'd known there's a coat room with hooks in the back hallway so that we didn't have to bring them to our table and have them take up space in close quarters.

The service here is top notch, and the menu has so many delicious choices. The Caramelized Jumbo Maine Sea Scallops Plate were absolutely outstanding! It can get a little cozy during busy evenings, but the food and experience make it completely worth it.
