Diners overwhelmingly call out the signature dish as the must-order. The vibe reads as vegan restaurant — service is consistently described as warm and unhurried. Common gotcha: queues form at peak times — go early or late.

Excerpts

Chaatwala (Herndon, VA) - A True Taste of Indian Street Food Chaatwala in Herndon is an exciting destination for anyone craving authentic Indian street food, or chaat. The atmosphere is casual and the menu focuses exclusively on vegetarian offerings, making it a great spot for both quick bites and dedicated snack runs. The best part of the experience is the sheer authenticity of the food. Every dish tastes genuinely homemade and brings the flavors of India to the DMV area. However, a word of caution for those sensitive to spice or oil: I found the food to be a little too oily and heavy on the masala for my personal preference. While the flavors were all there, the richness made the dishes less suitable for a full meal and more ideal for a heavy snack. The pricing is quite reasonable, and considering the quality and portion sizes, the value is definitely fair. It's truly a place best suited for snacking rather than a traditional sit-down dinner. The Dessert Standouts Where Chaatwala truly shines is in its beverage and dessert selection. The shakes are phenomenal. They are rich, perfectly blended, and taste genuinely refreshing. I highly recommend the traditional Falooda, which is a delightful, layered dessert-drink experience. The Chikoo Shake (Sapota fruit) is also an absolute must-try—it’s creamy, unique, and truly showcases the quality of their blended drinks. Overall, Chaatwala is a fantastic place to visit when you want an authentic, quick, vegetarian snack fix. Just prepare yourself for the rich, robust spice and oil levels characteristic of true street food. Go for the chaat, but definitely stay for those phenomenal shakes!

The food is certainly not up to par here. Neither was the friendliness of the rather dour uncle (who I assume owns the place). We ordered Masala dosa and the Samosa chat. The Samosa chat was ok but too heavy and not very flavorful. The Dosa was cooked in Ghee that pooled on the plate. Now it was my fault (I am vegan) for not checking if they made the Dosa in ghee. So I sent it back and got one cooked in oil (they made me pay for the second one). Fine. But overall both dosas are ridiculously thick (even when I asked them to make them thinner after seeing the first one). Also both dosas had peanut chutney - not a problem for me but I think these guys are setting themselves up for a lawsuit with folks who might have an allergy. The place is beautifully decorated - great murals, pictures of movie posters on each table. Very nice and vibrant. There is also a small room with games like tablet ennis and chess set up - cool.
