Hunan Chinese Restaurant is a true gem, the kind of place that reminds you why family-run restaurants matter so much. The food is nothing short of incredible. The dishes taste like they’ve been perfected over decades (because they have). The restaurant itself is beautiful in that timeless, old-school way that’s becoming harder and harder to find. It feels warm, elegant, and deeply authentic. The red lacquer, the lanterns, the carved wood, everything about it feels like stepping back into a more gracious era of dining. And the heart of it all is the owner, who has been running this restaurant since I was a child. Her care and artistry show in every single plate, right down to the delicate, hand-carved garnishes that make the dishes not just delicious, but works of art. Those little details elevate the entire experience, reminding you that you’re eating food made with love, skill, and pride. This isn’t just a place to grab a bite, it’s a treasure of the community. If you’ve never been to Hunan, go. Simply outstanding.

The food here is quite expensive. We paid $2.99 for a rancid spring roll. I ordered crispy pork ($16.99) but it was overcooked (see picture), the sauce was bland, and it was served on a bed of raw green peppers and onions😵💫 My husband ordered the beef General Tso ($16.99+). He said it was alright. However, the service and atmosphere were good. In short, the food tasted like it came from a typical American Chinese restaurant not a “fine” Chinese cuisine but was much more expensive and served in way smaller portions.

What a delightful surprise to find this place right next to some high speed chargers in Mattoon. Service was friendly, quick and great plating/presentation. I had the miso soup, somosas and basil tofu, with no peppers. Everything was absolutely delicious.
