Diners overwhelmingly call out the signature dish as the must-order. The vibe reads as vegan restaurant — service is consistently described as warm and unhurried. Common gotcha: queues form at peak times — go early or late.

Excerpts

My husband and I stopped at the newly-opened Kumi for first time at around 8:45 on the Saturday after New Year's Day, and I was happy to see that it was packed for as late as it was. I was a big fan of Mountain Top Coffee, the business that had occupied the space previously, and I was hopeful that the new owners would do the place justice. It appears that they certainly have! The space has been redecorated to reflect the fact that it's now a sushi/hibachi restaurant - from the Japanese-inspired photos, paintings, and decor to the fish-shaped lights that hung above our seats and the gold "beckoning" cats at the register, symbolizing good fortune, wealth, and customers. Customers seem to be treated very well, as we were greeted with a smile, sat at a small table at the window right away (it appeared to be the only one open, although plenty of bar seating was still available), and met by our server very quickly after we made ourselves comfortable. After our drinks were ordered (Chardonnay for me, sake for my husband), we started working our way through the huge menu of appetizers, sushi, sashimi, regular and specialty rolls, tempura, noodles, ramen, poke bowls, and hibachi options. There were so many excellent choices it was hard to decide, but we settled on 4 rolls - Spicy Tuna, Alaskan, Naruto, and Volcano. All were presented beautifully and tasted as good as they looked. The Volcano Roll, with its tuna, avocado, salmon, tempura flake, and touch of spicy mayo and sweet chili sauce was a standout - with a depth of flavor and perfect amount of creaminess - as was the cool, refreshing bite of the Naruto Roll. But all four were excellent and I'd order them again except for the fact that there are so many others I'm looking forward to trying on future visits. If you're passing through the Milwaukee area and love good sushi, definitely put Kumi on your list of restaurants to check out while you're here. And if you're local - especially if you live in Waukesha - put it on your list of restaurants to visit...again and again and again! Read less

I recently had a fantastic fine dining experience at the new Kumi restaurant. The elegant, chic décor perfectly captures a modern Asian aesthetic, the layout is well-designed, with a sushi and cocktail bar at the front and a more intimate private dining area featuring a cozy fireplace in the back. I’m already looking forward to the opening of their outdoor patio this summer. As someone who is health-conscious, I found their health-conscious food preparation to be ideal. I ordered a Ramen noodle dish and a Sashimi bowl; the ramen was impressively flavorful despite being lower in salt and sodium, the yellowfin tuna was exceptionally fresh and high-quality, each piece was perfectly cut into ideal bite-sized portions. One additional note, they provide low-sodium high-quality Kikkoman soy sauce for their customers to use. Highly recommended!

Atmosphere cultured, urban, pleasant lightly, and tasteful deco. Food is fresh, delicious, and presented beautifully. Great value as they could easily justify charging more based on the quality of the food. We had Sushi - Naruto roll which was rich yet refreshing and Ramen w/Chashu (pork belly) in favorful broth, veggies and ramen. The service was exceptional.
