Maria's is our breakfast spot! We drive the 60+ minutes from Lake Charles to this quaint diner in Groves, TX. Why? Because of the chilequiles! There are three sauce options: red, ranchero, and green. Every single one is great, but green is my new favorite because it is a tomatillo based green sauce, not cilantro (I'm one of the unfortunate soapers). Ask for the extra hot green sauce (beware: it requires a dose of respect), add an over easy egg and you've got breakfast perfection. There are places in Lake Charles that identify chilequiles on their menu, but they don't know what the heck they're even talking about. Maria's does! Additionally, the staff is so incredibly friendly and accommodating. My husband and I became recognized guests after our first visit. This place gets really busy on the weekends so plan accordingly, but definitely add it to your regular stops!

Hate to be this person but I’m Mexican and I know good, fresh food when I eat it and the barbacoa plate was not it. Pico wasn’t good. There was more tomato than anything else. the tomato looked old and soggy, not enough lime and lacked salt. Same with the guac. And the barbacoa tasted and smelt extremely old, and the portion was very small. The beans and rice were good tho. But everything else was 👎 will not be coming back ☹️

Today was my first time dining in here. The food was delicious, the food I did eat, I didn't eat everything I paid for. Dining in this diner is stressful. One customer was coughing so much, made me not wanting to stay in there, and another customer blew their nose at their table. It's too small of a place to have all of that going on. For some reason the waitresses doesn't understand your concerns. I wouldn't dine in here again. The food was good though.
