I first tried El Protrero when they were Quesidilla Express. They appear to be a family run business. The restaurant is always clean and they are always inviting. The wait time is very reasonable for just about anything you order. The one thing that works against them is that they are in an old bank on the backside of a shopping plaza behind the Oxford Martial Arts studio. It's very easy to drive right past and miss them. That said, there is no better place to get Mexican food in Oxford. My family and I have never had a bad thing here. My go to at any Mexican place is chicken chimichangas. If you can do that WELL, you've got me for life. I've dined in at El Protrero and taken out. The shredded chicken in the chimichanga is so tender and flavorful. I almost assume it's slow cooked and perfectly spiced. The vegetables are fresh and crisp. The portions are perfect. I found another dish I like called "Papas Locas". Basically, it's nacho fries. I get it with chorizo. I get it every time I order. It is delicious. You have melted cheese, chorizo, rice, corn, cilantro, tomatoes, lettuce, black beans and sour cream. All that over crinkle cut fries. If you haven't visited El Protrero, you're missing out. I've tried all the other places in Oxford. The quality is really unmatched. I was a big Burrito Loco guy before finding El Protrero and now ive found a new favorite. Be sure to treat yourself!

Really enjoying the new ownership, the food has definitely improved! The portions are now larger and the meats are better quality and flavor. If you haven't been lately, come check it out. Very good quality food and reasonable prices. The employees are also all very kind and helpful.
