Diners overwhelmingly call out the signature dish as the must-order. The vibe reads as vegan restaurant — service is consistently described as warm and unhurried. Common gotcha: queues form at peak times — go early or late.

Excerpts

So, I really wanted to like this place because it featured South Indian dishes and most of the ones in Illinois are North Indian. The first thing I noticed was that there weren't many Indians eating there so I can't justify the authenticity. I like that they have a vast menu but let's be honest, almost every non Indian couple that came in that night most likely got either butter chicken or chicken tikka masala. The "safe" dishes that are very familiar to every American's taste. It's basically the orange chicken or cheeseburger of Indian cuisine. We are not Indian but I don't like getting the "safe" dishes. We ordered strawberry lassi, masala dosa, onion kulcha, chicken mugali, king fish fry, and payasam. I also want to add that you must order biryani rice separately because it does not come automatically like most Indian places. The service started out good when it was just us and another table. Then, it became atrocious when a third table came. Our waitress basically deserted us to talk to them for long periods of time. I wanted to order a dessert sooner. Then it took awhile to get some boxes and the check. For the service I'll have to subtract some stars. Parking is ample. Prices were fair. The food portions were huge. However, I'm not sure I'll return due to the service and the dried fish fry. Overall 3.5. -strawberry lassi 3 - not bad. I didn't really taste much of strawberry. Not as distinct as the mango lassi. -masala dosa 5 - most popular kind of dosa. Not spicy. It's crispy and has a potato filling. It came with tomato and coconut chutney -onion kulcha 5 - thicker and more filling than naan. They are stuffed with savory onions and fluffy inside. They have onions along with other stuff. -chicken mugali 5 - chicken was tender to cut and eat. The sauce is thicker and mildly spicy. I liked it. -king fish fry 1.5 - the seasoning is not bad. It was supposed to be crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside like what Chat GPT said. The result was it was kind of tough to cut and very dry inside. It kind of tasted like dried up fish sticks. -payasam 5 - classic South Indian dessert. It has some vermicelli and is not sweet at all. I think there are some nuts in here. It comes hot.

I stopped in last night and picked up an order of Fish Biriyani • Garlic Naan • Nadan Chicken Curry. It was absolutely fantastic. I arrived early and I was instantly greeted by a young lady who let me know the food will be ready as estimated on the app. I was happy to wait because the place was very clean, pleasant, and very classy. I was able to talk to the owner or manager and they showed me photos of what it used to look like. This place is really fantastic. I cannot stress enough how good the food was. I look forward to actually stopping in and dining with my family. Salkara offers real fresh, rich food with a wonderful atmosphere.

Was just visiting this area while taking a course over the weekend. Saw this restaurant was in walking distance and decided to go since I love Indian food. The staff were so friendly and service was fast. The food was spectacular! The flavor in the tikka masala was one of the best I have had. Nice chunks of fresh garlic on the naan. Nice sized portions as well. Would absolutely come back!
